About Hintze

We focus on data

Unlike a lot of other firms that dabble in the area, we are serious about AI, privacy & cybersecurity. Privacy is our primary focus. While we are a small boutique law firm, our AI, privacy, and cybersecurity team rivals teams at the biggest firms in the nation in terms of size and know-how.

We serve as “outside in-house counsel”

Our clients like that we efficiently deliver practical & actionable advice. We achieve this not only through our deep knowledge of data issues but also through a strong base of in-house expertise & technical competence.

We won’t draft a memo you did not request. Just like a member of your team, we get to know your business, and we give you solutions you can send to your internal engineering and marketing clients. We can even loan you our folks as secondees to work directly with your team.

We commit to DEI

We believe that effective privacy counseling requires an understanding of how decisions about data effect all people, especially those with the least power. To achieve that shared understanding, we have assembled a diverse team with different backgrounds, experiences, viewpoints, and voices.

We are a woman-owned & certified minority and LGBTBE owned firm. From this leadership to every person we hire, we are committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion.

Proof of our commitment to diversity and inclusion is in the numbers. 96% of our legal professionals identify as diverse. 86% of our partners identify as diverse.

We actively support a pro bono policy of granting billable hours credit for pro bono and volunteer work. Our members actively engage in leadership and support of over a dozen diversity, equity, and inclusion organizations.

Our accolades

Our proudest moment of recognition was being awarded by the DEI Roundtable Law Firm Diversity Award for our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

For our substantive work, our firm and lawyers are ranked by our peers and colleagues as among the top professionals in privacy. Our firm has achieved recognition in Chambers’ Global & USA Privacy and Data Security rankings, the Legal 500’s U.S. Cyberlaw rankings, and in Global Data Review’s GDR 100 as one of the world’s best data law firms. Many of our lawyers have also achieved recognition in Chambers Global & USA, SuperLawyers, and Best Lawyers.

Where we started

Susan Hintze founded Hintze Law 10 years ago. After 15 years of practice, including 10 years of building and leading privacy groups in Big Law and serving as in-house privacy counsel at Dell and Microsoft, Susan decided to create a different type of practice. Susan envisioned and created the type of outside privacy & security practice that she always wanted to support her when she was in-house counsel and the type of inclusive and supportive firm culture she wished existed when she was an associate.

Starting with just herself and a handful of loyal clients and then a couple of lawyers, Susan was joined by her husband, Mike Hintze, who retired from his role as Chief Privacy Counsel for Microsoft. The firm quickly grew with a shared passion for excellence that involves deep subject matter expertise combined with outstanding client service, along with a leadership approach valuing and nurturing diversity, flexibility, and kindness.
